Jeff Newman

“People often talk about their dreams. In this series, I turned inward with a desire to express my dreams on canvas. I’m not a poet. I’m a painter.”

Art Gallery in Dreamtown - Oil on canvas 20 x 14 in. $1,100

Jeff Newman explores the relationship between Darwinian evolution and art. He believes that artists' use of the internet represents a significant shift in human culture, with implications for human evolution.

The evolution of art, from the earliest cave painters to the abstract art of the 20th century, took 64,000 years. However, today, it only takes seconds for a painter on one side of the world to see the work of another painter elsewhere. According to Newman, this immediate access to other artists' work creates a virtual conversation among artists and influences what and how they paint. He asserts that the global connectivity of artists is a driving force behind artistic and, more broadly, human evolution.

Jeff's exposure to art began early in his life, within his grandmother's library, which contained works of Russian academic art and various artistic movements of the 19th and 20th centuries. He received formal training in academic drawing and painting from Iliya Mirochnik, Slava Korolenkov, and the Bridgeview School of Fine Arts in Queens, NY.

In 1968, at the age of 13, Jeff visited his uncle Jim's art gallery, Dilexi, during a family vacation in San Francisco. The gallery was renowned for avant-garde art movements and the artists it represented. During his visit, Jim Newman introduced Jeff to the artists associated with the gallery. Jeff recalls, "I thought I had met the coolest people on the planet and was captivated by everything and everybody there."

Jeff earned his BA in Biology from Creighton University and then pursued an MS in Bio-Systems Engineering at the University of Nebraska. For Newman, science is as integral to his thought process as art. He believes that science and art are creatively linked disciplines that share a common lineage. To illustrate this point, he references the example of asking a child and an adult what the last common ancestor of a dog and a human looked like. While 45% of adults may argue about religion, a child would simply draw a picture.

Jeff's artwork has been showcased in galleries and art shows throughout New York City, including SOHO, the East Village, the Bowery, and Chelsea.

Marly Hendricks

“I am seeking for the bridge which leans from the visible to the invisible through reality.”
- Max Beckmann

Cupboard - Mixed media on paper 36 5x51 cm 2023 €550

Marly Hendricks (b.1963 in The Netherlands) completed her studies at the Amsterdam School of Fine Arts in 1989. She currently works as a visual artist in Amsterdam, focusing primarily on painting, drawing, and illustration. Rather than being lost in her own thoughts, she immerses herself in her surroundings, always observing and engaging with them.

Hendricks seeks to portray her environment as she experiences it, with a particular emphasis on the everyday and mundane aspects of life. She recognizes that the starkness of reality can sometimes obscure the intangible essence, the unsayable. Her artwork strives to capture and convey these elusive elements. While observation serves as her foundation, she skillfully balances recognizability with abstraction, openness, and interpretation when painting or drawing. Attention to detail and precision are paramount in her creative process. She aims for simplicity, eliminating any unnecessary distractions or "noise" from her compositions.

In her work, Hendricks often chooses to depict specific details, which simultaneously serve as memories of the complete image. This intimate approach aligns with the inherent intimacy and slowness of the drawing technique. Particularly in our fast-paced world, she values the meditative quality and unhurried pace of drawing. It allows her to fully immerse herself in the subject and capture its essence.

Above all, Hendricks' art delves into an inner landscape rooted in reality but intertwined with memories and universal experiences. Her work resonates with a sense of personal connection and invites viewers to explore their own emotional landscapes.

Robin Kerr

"I am an accidental immigrant, which puts you in a sort of limbo. My art reflects that. There is always some sort of mash-up; large shapes and tiny lines, blocks of color and specks of contrast, clean edges and smudges. It’s as though I am positive about some things but guessing at others."

Ballerina in Blue - Acrylic and Colored Pencil on Hot Press Watercolor Board, 15 x 12 in.

"My artwork is inspired by visual storytelling and capturing my subject’s likeness. A mixed media approach combines the freedom of laying bold washes with the tight control of drawing. As the piece is built up in many thin layers, I can carefully explore all the details. Quilting these details together as a visual story is where I find my greatest artistic passion."

What themes does your work involve?
Themes in my work are story and sentiment. My work brings together inspirations from all throughout my life – from my childhood memories to the relationships and roads travelled into adulthood. Each part has brought growth that I love to capture in art.
Describe your creative process.
I begin each project by gathering reference materials, most often photographing live models. While there may be an idea in mind beforehand, sometimes working with the model will inspire an idea for a painting. One of my favorite parts of the process is composing my ideas into a preliminary sketch. The sketch is then transferred onto the final artwork surface – either hot press watercolor board or toned paper. A mixed media approach combines acrylic ink with colored pencil, and finally opaque white acrylic for highlights. The piece is built up in many thin layers, focusing on each detail while also seeing the picture as a whole to create balance in the composition. I think of the value structure and each element of the painting as instruments of an orchestra playing together in concert.
What influences your work? What inspires you? Why do you make art?
I am constantly inspired by the people in my life and the experiences along the way. My inspiration is an eclectic collection of memories and stories – sometimes even expanding upon real life in my artwork. My greatest artistic influences of all are my mentors from Hartford Art School. The techniques used in my work were handed down from them directly, and over time expanded upon in my own way. Always embracing my foundation in traditional drawing and painting techniques, I have been dedicated to carrying on the legacy of my mentors. They helped me grow not only as an artist, but as a person. I am truly grateful for their incredible support and influence in my life.
What is good art? What makes a piece of art great?
I think that good art tells a story in some way, evoking significant meaning for the viewer (or artist!) When these elements come together in a visually beautiful way is what truly makes art great to me. I believe every artist has their own unique voice and that there is something beautiful to be found in every piece of art. Each viewer brings their own experiences and influences with them when looking at art, making each viewing experience unique. In this sense, I believe that beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder.
What is the role of the artist today?
One of the most important roles of the artist is to tell stories, documenting the events and memories of today in a lasting and meaningful way through art. I see an artist’s greatest purpose as being able to inspire others, passing the torch to the next generations the way my mentors passed it on to me.
