Brenda Hartill

"My work is experimental, abstract and embossed. Collagraph, etching, watercolour, collage and encaustic works. My main love is abstracting the essence of the landscape in richly coloured textured works, often enhanced with silver and gold leaf. Recent works include a series of watercolour paintings with collagraph embossings. My on-going fascination is with erosion, weather patterns, natural textures, growth formations and universal organic forms.”

Born in London, England, Brenda Hartill emigrated to New Zealand with her parents in the late 1950s and was educated there, graduating FA Honours at the Elam School of Fine Art Auckland. She returned to London in the late 1960s to study Theatrical Design at the Central School of Art and Design. 

In the early 80s, Hartill turned towards printmaking and has since been successfully publishing her prints. She is a member of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers (RE).

Cristina Corvino

"In the past two years, my production has focused on the creation of a number of works from the "Time Machines" series that investigate the social role of women throughout history, these works belong to the style of Conservative Art, a term coined with a registered trademark."

Italian artist, Cristina Corvino attended the Liceo Artistico Renato Cottini as a pupil of Antonio Carena, an established painter known for the "Heavens", and of the designer Giorgio Ceretti, known for the creation of the "Pratone" sofa. The teachings of these masters gave Corvino an aptitude for research and a passion for art that will grow and become expressed in a variety of visual languages: painting, installations, fashion, theater; experimentations which over time will give life to mixed media series of works, independent of the will of the client.

With a Degree in Architecture and a career as architect and restorer, Cristina Corvino continues her artistic activity in parallel. In some cases inserted as an integral part of the workspace and in other cases as a continuous comparison with ancient works and various executive techniques.

"Encaustic and other translucent mediums have helped me create luminous layers. After painting land and waterscapes for many years I realized that I could put forth healing energy towards the earth. Healing occurs through painting, meditation, education, sharing the message through the image itself."

What themes does your work involve?
The underlying concept in all of my work is using one's own energy as a vehicle for healing. This is applied to healing the earth, healing oneself and those around me.
Describe your creative process.
I research a concept, do a series of drawings, then usually work at a more unconscious level until it has design, color balance and beauty. I use multiple mediums to achieve the effect I am searching for. I often dream what I must paint and cannot let go of the image in my mind until it has been painted.
What influences your work? What inspires you? Why do you make art?
The problems we face globally, the human condition in general, and preserving our earth for our children is my influence and inspiration. I make art because I am compelled by my feelings to do so. I have always made art since I could hold a pencil. It is a compulsion, a need, a requirement. I am meant to record my time on earth in this way.
What is good art? What makes a piece of art great?
Art must speak to the viewer. It must resonate somehow.
What is the role of the artist today?
We are recording our time on earth. We are responsible for responding and sharing our interpretation with others so they can see what they might not otherwise see, understand a point of view in a different way, find humor or beauty or meaning to things they might not otherwise give thought to.
