Vibrant. Energetic. Ethereal. These are words that surface when viewing the art of Monica Loncola. Originally from Monmouth County, NJ, the artist summered on the beaches of the Atlantic where she continues to be inspired by the treasures she finds along tidelines of the ocean and rivers. Working predominantly in oil, watercolor, pencil and ink, the artist creates works that transcend the ordinary, giving rise to iconic forms uniquely her own yet familiar. Patterns, fractals, forms, and colors merge together creating evocative versions of objects that stop her in her tracks compelling her to create an image of what captures her attention. Her work has been published in the New York Times, Edible Long Island, Spotlight Magazine to name a few. She has exhibited internationally through the US State Department Art in-the-Embassies Program in The Gambia, West Africa, Japan, Puerto Rico, and in numerous cities in the USA. She holds a BFA from Rosemont College, PA and has studied at the Art Students League, NYC, Moore College of Art, PA. and Academy of Art University, San Francisco, CA. Ms. Loncola spends her time equally between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans where she maintains a studio in the SF Bay Area, and at ChaShaMa.org Matawan, NJ.

Just the FACs, Ma’am: Fitzsimmons Aagaard Carlson

Contreras2019.jpg

Contreras Gallery, next door to Davis Dominguez, offers up a political show Sept. 7 to 28. Just the FACs, Ma’am rounds up three satirists: David “Fitz” Fitzsimmons, cartoonist for the Arizona Daily Star; painter Gary Aagaard; and Rand Carlson, a painter and tin artist and a Tucson Weekly cartoonist. These three scathing gents will stop at nothing to get a laugh—and to afflict the comfortable, as the old journalism saw goes. “Swamp Shell Game,” an Aagaard painting of President Trump and Mitch McConnell as a pair of carnally joined turtles, is one of the most horrifying things you’ll ever see. Opening reception 6 to 9 p.m., Sept. 7.
