Joanne Ayley

"I paint bright and colourful landscapes, wildlife and funky flowers using acrylics. I love visual drama and contrast so tend to use lots of sharp edges and complimentary colours. My inspiration comes from living on Vancouver Island; beautiful wildlife and scenery are all around me."

Fall Fairway - Acrylic 12 x 12 x 1.5 in.

Joanne’s interest in art has been lifelong. She has explored design, coloured pencils, pastels, pen and ink, block-printing, film and animation, illustration, cartooning, life drawing, watercolour, silk painting, paper collage and tile mosaics.

At McGill University, Joanne studied film and communications with a view to a career in film or advertising. After writing advertising copy for a major retailer, she took a side step into the group insurance industry where she progressed to writing and designing marketing materials. She followed that up with a freelance career as a graphic artist and marketing services provider.

Shortly before retiring, Joanne had a chance to spend a few months focussing on drawing and painting in Vancouver. That summer kickstarted her love of all things art and all things British Columbia. Since then, she has relocated to British Columbia and embraced painting. She can regularly be found in her studio working on her latest inspiration.

Joanne has studied art at George Brown College, Toronto (design, illustration, life drawing, watercolour, cartooning). She has taken drawing and painting classes with international artist Laara WilliamSen (White Rock, BC), Louise Cordingly Zych (Etobicoke, Ontario), Susan Falcon-Hargraves (Scottsdale, Arizona) and Lynda Colbeck (TOSH) as well as numerous workshops.

Joanne has shown her art in a variety of group shows at The McMillan Arts Centre, Parksville, B.C, The Old School House (TOSH), Qualicum Beach, B.C., the Annual Brandt Wildlife Art Show, at Serious Coffee in Nanaimo and in the Federation Gallery in the Nature Trust of BC and Animalis exhibits. She has also participated in online shows through the Nanaimo Chapter FCA and in the Art Alchemy Square Foot Show in Courtenay, B.C.

Joanne is an Active Member of the Federation of Canadian Artists, Arrowsmith and Nanaimo Chapters as well as a member of the DeCosmos Art Society, TOSH Arts Centre, Oceanside Arts Council and Nanaimo Arts Council.
