Margins: Woman Side is one of five watercolor pieces based on photographs by Garry Winogrand. In point of fact, he photographed ordinary marginal people to populate the center of his photos. I took the marginals around the central marginal figure to emphasize the separation and aloneness of living. What’s most interesting about this piece (and the other four) is that they were all created before the COVID pandemic. It makes the isolation of Margins: Woman Side all the more tragic and poignant now in the present time. The wide and empty space is to allow the viewer to imagine what is this lone figure about. Where is she going? Where is she coming from?
