Marshall Gould

"Photography is a very subtle thing. You must let the camera take you by the hand, as it were, and lead you into your subject."

- Margaret Bourke-White

Horse Avedon - B&W Digital Photograph 30.5 x 45.5 in.

Marshall Gould’s sharp, high contrast black-and-white photographic prints can be characterized by diagonal framing, clean compositions, dramatic highlights and strong, luxurious shadows utilizing the full dynamic range of the zone system.

Often taking candid, documentary-style shots on location with natural light, Gould’s latest subject matter might involve a landscape of the American West, a series of equine portraits or documentary images that show the intimate relationship between a mare and her newborn foal, or a culture/lifestyle image, making these gritty, regional works as conceptually dense as they are compositionally superb.

Gould’s works are about co-existence and reference the stylistic philosophies of the early black-and-white “Golden Age” of photography. Gould aims to convey a vibrant and provocative visual narrative about the land, the wildlife, and western culture of his current locale.

He has exhibited at the Agora Gallery in NYC, The Blank Wall Gallery in Athens, Greece, The Open Shutter Gallery in Durango, Colorado, and The Mistlin Gallery in Modest, CA. He has also received numerous honors in The Spider Awards and has been frequently published in Black & White Magazine over the last six years.

Marshall Gould was born in Providence, Rhode Island and received his Bachelor of Industrial Design from the College of Visual and Performing Arts, Syracuse University. He and his wife Becky and their 2 golden retrievers live in Oakdale, California, “The Cowboy Capital of the World.”
